New attraction at Alipore Zoo, first-ever birdcage open for visitors, leopard cat brought in

Alipore Zoo, which marks its 150th anniversary this year, is introducing an exciting new attraction. Starting this winter, the zoo will open a large birdcage to the public, allowing visitors to walk inside and get closer to nature in a new way. The birdcage is a significant addition, housing around 12 species of birds, including both land and aquatic varieties. Among the features of this new exhibit are a water body and a walking pathway designed to give visitors a more immersive experience. Visitors will not be permitted to touch the birds but can interact with them by observing and photographing them. Chairs will also be provided inside the birdcage to allow visitors to rest while enjoying the surroundings.

This birdcage is part of the zoo’s special celebrations for its 150th year, aiming to offer something new and engaging to visitors. The zoo’s officials have been working on this project for months, and it is expected to be a popular attraction. The large glass-enclosed birdcage will ensure that the birds remain safe while providing an opportunity for guests to observe them up close. It is also designed to simulate the natural habitat of the birds, complete with a water feature for aquatic species. Alipore Zoo is the first in West Bengal to introduce such an exhibit, making it a unique experience for both local visitors and tourists.

In addition to the new birdcage, Alipore Zoo is set to welcome a new species — the leopard cat, marking its first-ever appearance in the zoo. The leopard cat is a small, nocturnal mammal native to parts of Asia, known for its distinctive leopard-like spotted coat. This animal is categorized as near-threatened, making it an important addition to the zoo’s efforts to raise awareness about wildlife conservation. The leopard cat is being brought to Alipore Zoo from the Siliguri Bengal Safari, and its arrival is highly anticipated. Plans are underway to showcase the cat to the public in the coming days, and visitors will be able to learn more about the species and its conservation status.

The zoo has been expanding its collection in recent years. As part of its ongoing efforts to diversify the animals on display, Alipore Zoo has recently acquired several new animals. Among them are a pair of Royal Bengal tigers, a white tigress, Himalayan bears, swamp deer, and mouse deer, all brought from other safari parks such as Nandan Kanan and Bengal Safari. These animals are part of the zoo's continued commitment to animal conservation and showcasing endangered species.

Additionally, Alipore Zoo has been actively working on improving its infrastructure. A new entrance gate has recently been inaugurated, marking one of the many modernizations taking place in preparation for its anniversary celebrations. Plans are also in place to introduce a green anaconda to the zoo, which will be sourced from the Madras Crocodile Bank. This giant snake is an important addition to the zoo’s collection of reptiles. The necessary enclosures for the anaconda are already being finalized, and it is expected to join the zoo soon. With these developments, Alipore Zoo continues to be an important hub for wildlife conservation, education, and engagement.
